Landmarks of Amsterdam

WritingTravellers open guidebooks: written by travellers and locals, printed specially for you.
In this guide Amsterdam is divided in 5 areas: Centre and Jordaan, South and the Pijp, West, East and North.

Roughly it means: Center and the Jordaan is the city center of course. West means west from the Center including the Vondelpark. South and the Pijp are the parts of Amsterdam south of the center and the Vondelpark. East is the part of Amsterdam on the other side of the Amstel outside the center. North is the easiest to understand: that is the part above the IJ, north of the Central Station.

To understand the structure of the center of the city further: The inner city is build in the shape of a series of horse shoe canals, that fit into one another. Inside out the names of these canals are: Singel, Herengracht (Gentlemen Canal), Keizersgracht (Empires Canal), Prinsengracht (Princes Canal). At the base of the concentric horse shoes lays the Central Station (Amsterdam CS) with it back against "Het IJ". From the station a shopping street called Damrak goes straight into the city as a kind of mirror line of the inner city. It ends at the main square, De Dam. After this square the same street continues, but has a different name "Rokin".

Within the centre of Amsterdam there are several interesting squares. They each are worth a visit because of their own atmosphere.
  • Dam
  • Leidseplein
  • Museumplein
  • Nieuwmarkt
  • Rembrandtplein
  • Waterlooplein

Hi Marjolein, could you add for each area of Amsterdam, as used in this guide, a few words defining that area so people know where to look if they are looking for info about a specific area?
