Jama Masjid Delhi
WritingTravellers open guidebooks: written by travellers and locals, printed specially for you.
The Jama Masjid of Delhi, is called the most beautiful, biggest and best-known mosques in India. Built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1656. It lies at the beginning of a very lively part of Old Delhi called Chandni Chowk.
Jama Masjid is a reference to the weekly congregation observed on Friday (the yaum al-jum`a). The courtyard of the mosque can hold up to twenty-five thousand worshippers. The mosque houses several relics in a closet in the north gate. One of them is a copy of the Qur'an written on deer skin.
Shah Jahan built several important mosques in Delhi, Agra, Ajmer and Lahore. The Jama Masjid's floor plan is very similar to the Jama Masjid at Agra, but the Jama Masjid is the bigger and more imposing of the two. Its majesty is further enhanced because of the high ground that he selected for building this mosque.
One can climb the towers to get a great view over the mosque itself, the old city and the Red Fort. People who are scarred of high altitudes should not go up. | | |
