Cycling through the city

WritingTravellers open guidebooks: written by travellers and locals, printed specially for you.
Cycling is how everybody moves around so that is what you should do too. Biking in Amsterdam and in fact, in The Netherlands, is very Dutch. So experience this wonderful mode of transportation when you are here.

Although Amsterdam has a busy flow of traffic and the canals, lanes can intimidate, there is about 400 km of cycling lanes and paths. There are clear traffic signs and signals especially for cyclists. Please follow them for a safe ride round the city.

You can hire a bike in many places and they will inform you about nice routes you can make in and just outside the city. Tours also run throughout the year. It is a great introduction to the city on bike.

Don't forget to lock your bikes with the chain locks. Never leave one unlocked even for a 1- minute dash into a shop!

ferdinand, manja and all contributors, many thanks for the contributions. I do try to add round the existing content without taking anyone's contribution out, working mainly on flow, grammar and little things. Thanks for the links and layout changes. Great work everyone.
